Principal Hospitals

Perth Royal Infirmary and Ninewells Hospital have an A&E Department.

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery, if required, is likely to take place at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee.

After the neurosurgical episode of care is complete, depending on the severity of the injury and the age of the patient, they may go to the George Sharp Unit in Fife or CBIR at the Royal Victoria, if they cannot go home.   There is care of the elderly rehabilitation at Perth Royal Infirmary – the ‘Tay’ ward and also there is an Angus Rehabilitation Unit in Stracathro Hospital.  There is also elderly rehabilitation within the Medicine for the Elderly wards at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Dundee.

Rehabilitation

The Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation (CBIR)  is situated at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Dundee.

They are an area wide service, admitting people from across the whole of Tayside. They provide in-patient rehabilitation to adults aged 16-65 who have complex disability following a brain injury, and who will benefit from interdisciplinary rehabilitation before being discharged from hospital.

All patients have an individual, goal orientated programme tailored to their own needs. With assistance from their families we help patients to achieve their goals in areas of health, activity and wellbeing. Families/carers will have an opportunity to attend the rehabilitation sessions. The team comprises nurses, doctors, occupational therapists, clinical neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, dietitian, technical instructors, clinical co-ordinator, service manager and artist. They also work closely with our colleagues in the acute hospital services and in the community based services. Student training is provided and there are often trainees and students from all disciplines in the centre, taking advantage of excellent learning opportunities.

The Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation is based within the main Royal Victoria Hospital building.

The  centre has a flexible visiting  policy however we  ask visitors if possible to avoid therapy times to ensure that patients get the most out of their individual goal orientated programmes. Weekend visiting can be more flexible, however the centre operates a protected mealtimes policy, therefore visiting is discouraged between 12-1pm and 5-6pm.

Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation Short Film – This short film will introduce you to rehabilitation at the Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation. We hope that the information informs you about this stage of the brain injury rehabilitation journey. The video can help prepare you for spending time with us, whether that is as a patient, relative, friend or student. The film was made in 2005 and while some things have changed we think it still gives an insight into our service.  Watch the Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation short film
