Borders General Hospital has an A&E Department.
Neurosurgery
Patients are referred to the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh for neurosurgical care, if required. After neurosurgery, patients may be referred on to the Astley Ainslie Hospital in Edinburgh for inpatient rehabilitation, or back to the Borders General, other local hospitals, or discharged home as appropriate.

Rehabilitation takes place in the Borders Stroke / Neurorehabilitation unit at Borders General Hospital (Ward 11).

Patients may then be referred to local community resources, such as Hay Lodge Hospital (Peebles), Knoll Hospital (Duns), Kelso and Hawick Community Hospitals. Berwick Hospital serves North Northumberland and is within the catchment area. These hospitals have 12-20 beds each, and offer inpatient and outpatient occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, and physiotherapy.
Community Support
There is a small amount of Community Rehabilitation available in the Borders; Kelso and Coldstream have Teviot Community Rehab service (with Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy input), central Borders have the ‘Hospital to Home’ Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services. Other areas do not have community rehab services.
Patients may also be seen as outpatients at the Astley Ainslie Hospital.
Third Sector Support
Heads Together support adults in the Borders with brain injuries, offering day trips, entertainment evenings and advice. Meetings are held at 3 Dovemount Place, Hawick, TD9 8AZ. Heads Together also offer respite at their wheelchair friendly static caravan sited at Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Headway Borders is a support group for people with brain injury, their families and carers. Service users can access a support group/activities between 2pm and 4pm at the Trinity Church Hall, 48 High Street, Galashiels, TD1 1SE on the first and third Tuesday of the month. At the support/activities group, refreshments are provided and users have access to contacts, therapists and activities, as well as informative talks and presentations. The group also organises day trips, lunches and an annual Christmas party.

The Momentum Borders Brain Injury Rehabilitation Service exists to support adults of working age (16 years or older) who have a brain injury, as well as their families and carers. The service aims to help those living with brain injury to better understand, adjust to and manage the long term effects of brain injury. The service also works with other agencies involved in the provision of the person’s health and social needs.
The service includes the following elements:
- Assessment of each person’s needs
- Support in managing the effects of a brain injury
- One-to-one emotional support
- Advice and information
- Home visits
- Support to relearn everyday living and social skills
- Close working with families and carers
- Access to a consultant neuropsychologist
- Job retention and employment support
Three support groups that meet monthly, based in the following areas: Berwickshire, Central Borders & Peebles.
Momentums’ Heads You Win Course, delivered in partnership with Borders College, offers service users the opportunity to gain self-confidence, social integration and increase their skills through courses which include information technology, cookery and numeracy.

Third Sector Support – Children and Young People
When a child acquires a brain injury it can have a devastating effect on all the family. The Child Brain Injury Trust is a UK-wide charity that supports families and professionals working with children and young people who find themselves in need of more information about what has happened. Enquire is the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning. They aim to:
- raise awareness of children’s rights to extra support in school
- help families and schools work together to ensure children get the support they need
- provide advice to children and young people who might be struggling in school.
They offer lots of ways to access help including a telephone helpline, guides, factsheets and outreach work. All the information and advice provided is independant and impartial.

The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments (SCCMI)
Based at the Craighalbert Centre in Cumbernauld, SCCMI provide educational and therapy services for children and young people throughout Scotland affected by cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions, which result in disorders of learning, movement and communication.
