Principal Hospitals

Both hospitals have an A&E Department.

Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery, if required, is likely to take place at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Rehabilitation

There is a pan-NHS Ayrshire & Arran Neuropsychology service  – covering Acute and Neurorehabilitation.  Highly Specialised Psychological assessment and treatment is provided to identify and manage cognitive, behavioural and emotional problem post ABI within the acute, rehab and community setting.  Services are provided for any adult over 16, with any severity of injury. The neuropsychology service provides direct 1:1 patient care or as part of a wider MDT. The Neuropsychology service also provide consultation to the wider health and social care partnership in the care of patients with ABI. There is no limit to the timeframe for the duration of care rather the assessment, intervention and duration is matched to patient need.  Inpatient care is provided at the two general hospitals Crosshouse and Ayr and are closely aligned with Liaison Psychiatry.

The Douglas Grant Rehabilitation Centre (DGU) in Irvine is a purpose-built unit in the West of Scotland offering a specialist integrated rehabilitation service.  The unit is not a specialist brain injury service, but increasingly sees patients with a brain injury.  Patients present in Acute units, then colleagues arrange an assessment for suitability for transfer to the DGU or for facilitation to another unit – private or NHS. Patients will be accepted unless they are medically unstable, who are still have investigations underway – i.e. MRIs, or extremely agitated patients at a high risk of absconding.

Community Support

The Dirrans Centre in Kilwinning provides a rehabilitation service for adults across North Ayrshire with a physical disability, brain injury, neurogical or long-term condition.  It is a slow-stream rehabilitation service, providing day services  – Monday to Friday, and patients attend according to their need.

Third Sector Support

There is a very active headway group in Ayrshire.  Headway Ayrshire offers support, information and services (short term, long term or as required). Headway Ayrshire’s trained staff and volunteers work together to improve knowledge and understanding of brain/head injury.  The service is free of charge and fully available to anyone suffering from the effects of brain/head injury. Headway Ayrshire provides information, advice and support services at home and on the Headway premises, they also provide monthly advice sessions for North Ayrshire Clients within a local GP Practice.  They provide advice and support for attending appointments and accessing benefits, and run weekly Community Rehabilitation groups, monthly Carers Meetings, and provide Numeracy & Literacy Tuition and Carers Education.  In addition, they Headway Ayrshire also campaign to reduce incidents of head injury, via presentations to Partner Agencies, Secondary Schools and Sports Clubs.  At present Headway Ayrshire runs two Community Rehabilitation groups in Ayrshire.

Third Sector Support – Children and Young People

When a child acquires a brain injury it can have a devastating effect on all the family.  The Child Brain Injury Trust is a UK-wide charity that supports families and professionals working with children and young people who find themselves in need of more information about what has happened. Enquire is the Scottish advice service for additional support for learning. They aim to:

  • raise awareness of children’s rights to extra support in school
  • help families and schools work together to ensure children get the support they need
  • provide advice to children and young people who might be struggling in school.

They offer lots of ways to access help including a telephone helpline, guides, factsheets and outreach work. All the information and advice provided is independant and impartial.

The Scottish Centre for Children with Motor Impairments (SCCMI)

Based at the Craighalbert Centre in Cumbernauld, SCCMI provide educational and therapy services for children and young people throughout Scotland affected by cerebral palsy and other neurological conditions, which result in disorders of learning, movement and communication.
