About SABIN

The Scottish Acquired Brain Injury Network (SABIN)’s vision is that children and adults with acquired brain injury (ABI) in Scotland will have equal access to highest quality of care, regardless of where they live.

SABIN is a National Managed Clinical Network, and to achieve this vision, SABIN brings together a multi-disciplinary group of service user representatives, health care professionals, service providers, and voluntary sector groups interested in the provision of brain injury services.

SABIN’s Background
In 2000 the Office of Public Health carried out a needs assessment which included Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), (SNAP -Huntington’s Disease, acquired brain injury and early onset dementia, 2000).  It contained ten recommendations which covered planning, pathways of care, standards, information for professionals and patients, advocacy, mental health, training and education, development of guidelines, data and access to services.

A letter containing a summary review of progress was issued in 2003 which contained nine recommendations, one of which referred to Managed Clinical Networks (Review of progress since SNAP report on Huntington’s Disease, acquired brain injury and early onset dementia, 2003).

On the 24 January 2005, a group of clinicians from across Scotland met to agree a proposal for the introduction for the National Managed Clinical Network (NMCN) for ABI, which was then submitted to the National Services Division (NSD). This proposal was eventually agreed in 2006 and a service level agreement was arranged by NSD to provide the co-ordination and facilitation of SABIN.

All individuals interested in ABI in Scotland are eligible to become involved in the work of SABIN.  These include, but are not limited to, physicians, health professionals, patients and their families, voluntary organisations, local authority staff, and research workers.
