The Scottish Perinatal Mental Health Care Pathways – Preconception Advice

Pathway 1: What’s preconception advice? How can it help me if I’m planning a pregnancy?

If you have had certain types of mental illness in the past, and are planning a pregnancy, then it is important to seek preconception advice.  All women with pre-existing mental health problems should be able to discuss pregnancy planning with their own mental health team or GP, so that they can make informed decisions about future pregnancies and their treatment. For some women, seeing a specialist professional can help prevent problems arising later on.
