SSVN

Scottish Systemic Vasculitis Network

Introduction

Systemic Vasculitis is a complex multi-system autoimmune condition that commonly begins in individuals of working age. Characterised by inflammation of blood vessels, it can affect multiple major organs at one time, necessitating input from many different hospital based specialists. Once universally fatal, systemic Vasculitis is now considered a chronic disease. However, the risk of premature death remains high. Moreover, substantial impairments in quality of life and work disability are routine.  Organ damage, disease relapse and co-morbidities can develop rapidly, necessitating early detection and frequent outpatient surveillance. Diagnostic delays are associated with poorer outcomes.

The network was commissioned in 2019 to improve access to care and reduce variation.
