The Scottish Mesothelioma Network consists of :
Glasgow
The Glasgow centre serves the patients of Glasgow and accepts referrals from across the West of Scotland.
The pleural service is supported by three Respiratory Consultants (Professor Kevin Blyth, Dr Selina Tsim and Dr Neil McGlinchey) as well as a Pleural Clinical Nurse Specialist (Laura McNaughton) and Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist (Carolyn MacRae). The pleural service offers pleural aspiration, US assessment, IPC and local anesthetic thoracoscopy (LAT) for diagnostic and symptomatic benefit.
The lead Clinician for Mesothelioma is Professor Kevin Blyth.
All VATS procedures are carried out at the Golden Jubilee Hospital and the The Beatson provides chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
Aberdeen
The Respiratory, cardiothoracic and Oncology Units in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary serve patients in the Grampian region.
The pleural service is supported by three Respiratory Physicians (Dr. Mahendran Chetty, Dr. Ratna Alluri and Dr. Fiona Thomson) and Specialist Pleural nurses (Sonni Andrew and Jocelyn Roden). Pleural service offers diagnostic and therapeutic pleural interventions including thoracic Ultrasound and indwelling pleural catheter insertion.
Lead clinician for Mesothelioma service is Dr. Mahendran Chetty and Tracy Petrie is MacMillan Mesothelioma Clinical nurse specialist. Thoracic surgeons carry out VATS procedures.
Lung cancer oncology team based in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary provide chemotherapy and radiotherapy
Dundee
The Dundee centre provides healthcare services to the Perth Royal Infirmary, Stracathro Hospital, Arbroath Infirmary and Montrose Royal Infirmary which cover Angus, the City of Dundee and Perth and Kinross.
The pleural service is supported by three Respiratory Physicians (Dr.Philip Short, Dr Helen Liddicoat and Dr Richard Stretton) and Specialist Pleural Nurse(Susan Smyth). Pleural service offers diagnostic and therapeutic pleural interventions including thoracic ultrasound, indwelling pleural catheter insertion and local anaesthetic thoracoscopy (LAT)
Lead clinician for Mesothelioma service is Dr. Philip Short and Susan Smyth is the Macmillan Mesothelioma UK Clinical Nurse Specialist.
For surgical thoracoscopy patients are referred to the thoracic surgery team in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
Lung cancer oncology team based in Ninewells Hospital provide Systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) and radiotherapy.
Edinburgh
Alongside the Western General (WGH), NHS Lothian’s patients are served by Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (REI) and St. Johns Hospital (SJH, Livingston). Kirkcaldy’s Victoria Hospital (VHK) and the Borders General Hospital (BGH) also make up South East Scotland. All hospital have individual pleural units and local anaesthetic thoracoscopy is currently available at VHK and REI, with the full range of pleural diagnostic and therapeutic interventions available on all 5 sites. Surgical input with VATS is offered at REI by the thoracic surgeons. Oncology expertise is provided by the Edinburgh Cancer Centre, WGH.
Dr. Reid works at WGH supporting fellow consultant Dr. Andrew Leitch with the pleural service. Within the unit there is a real focus on ambulatory and patient-centred care in pleural disease. We hope to introduce local anaesthetic thoracoscopy to the WGH site later this year and the appointment of a Mesothelioma and pleural specialist nurse at the WGH site in the coming months.
Inverness
Raigmore Hospital serves the whole of NHS Highland area and accepts referral from across the area including West Grampian and the Western Isles.
Patients receive the majority of their diagnostic investigations at Raigmore but can be referred to Glasgow if surgical procedures such as VATS and LAT are required. All patients are discussed at the Scottish National Mesothelioma MDT and we aim to optimise access to clinical trials were possible. Systemic treatment is given locally either at Raigmore or at one of our peripheral chemotherapy units in Wick, The Western Isles, Fort William and on Skye. Radiotherapy is given at Raigmore.
We have a pleural service, largely nurse-led, which offers pleural aspiration, US assessment, and IPC for diagnostic and symptomatic benefit. The pleural service is delivered by three Respiratory Consultants; Dr Beth Sage, Dr Stephen Thomas and Dr Ed Paterson and by Jenn Latham and Maureen Williamson Advanced Nurses. Lucy Heycock Advanced Nurse works across respiratory and oncology. Both Jenn’s and Lucy’s posts are Mesothelioma UK adopted.
