Managing Burns training course

Members of Care of Burns in Scotland (COBIS) led the development of this virtual training course, aimed at clinical staff who many have to look after acute burns.

Course summary

In this course, led by burns surgeon, Mr Stuart Watson along with burns specialists, you will learn how to manage major and minor burns. The modules consist of lectures, along with practical tutorials, covering the essentials of physiology, recognition, assessment, and management of all common burn types.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the assessment of burn injuries
  • Initiate a treatment plan for most burn injuries
  • Describe important aspect of burn patient care such as infection prevention, nutrition, temperature control, pain management, physiotherapy and psychological care
  • Carry out debridement and dressing of burn wounds
  • Describe why large burn injuries cause systemic illness and why burns may threaten the airway, cause renal failure, and multi-organ failure
