Care of Burns in Scotland Annual Education Event 2023

Our Annual Education Event is scheduled for Thursday 21 September 2023. Delegates can join via Microsoft Teams or in-person at The Studio on Hope Street, Glasgow. The event is scheduled to run from 12.30pm to 5.15pm.

This is a free event open to professionals across all disciplines who work in burn care and management.

The theme of this year’s event is Major Incident Response. This will encourage delegates to consider what would happen in the event of a major burn incident in Scotland.

Speakers

We will welcome a variety of experts in their field who will share their first-hand experiences. These include:

  • Paul Baker, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon from Auckland National Burn Centre. Paul will discuss burn lessons learned from the Whakaari volcanic eruption in 2019.
  • Dr Sarah Gaskell, Consultant Clinical Psychologist- Burns at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. Sarah will cover the psychological impact on young patients following the Manchester arena attack.
  • Dr JP Loughrey, Consultant in Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine. JP works with the Emergency Medical Retrieval Service (EMRS) and will give an overview of pre-hospital care and critical care response.
  • PC Stuart Porteous from Police Scotland and Ian McMeekin, Area Commander from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. Stuart and Ian will outline their respective emergency service experiences of the Kincaidston gas explosion in 2021.
