Lipid Subgroup

Chair: Dr Jonathan Malo, Consultant Chemical Pathologist (NHS Lothian),

Vice-Chair: Dr Suzanne MacKenzie, Consultant Chemical Pathologist (NHS Ayrshire & Arran)

Vice-Chair: Dr Bill Simpson, Consultant Chemical Pathologist (NHS Grampian)

Membership

Our group includes lipidologists and clinicians working on cardiovascular risk, clinical scientists (from both biochemistry and genetics), clinical geneticists and paediatricians with an interest in inherited dyslipidaemia.

Background

The Lipid Subgroup was established by the Scottish Clinical Biochemistry Network (SCBN) with the primary remit of promoting best practice in the laboratory measurement and reporting of lipids, and within clinical services for individuals with dyslipidaemia. Our work aims to improve cardiovascular disease (including coronary heart disease and stroke) prevention, with a particular focus on inherited hyperlipidaemias including Familial Hypercholesterolaemia.

Aims

  • To promote access across Scotland to appropriate lipid testing, risk assessment and therapy.
  • To support biochemistry departments and lipid clinic services, within each health board, to achieve the above by providing:
    • A consensus approach to lipid testing and reporting.
    • Updates from national and international guidelines on the assessment and management of dyslipidaemia.
    • A place to share relevant protocols and documents between health boards, including formulary applications, lipid guidance for primary care.
    • Analysis of test request, and prescription variation.
    • A picture of resource and staffing variation.
    • A single point of contact on Scottish lipid-related matters for clinical biochemistry departments, lipid services and relevant non-NHS entities (including charities, pharmaceutical or diagnostics companies).
