About Us

The Scottish HPB Cancer Network is one of the five National Managed Clinical Networks for Cancer in Scotland.

It was officially launched in April 2005 by the Health Minister.  It’s primary aim is to ensure equity of care for all patients in Scotland with cancer of the liver, pancreas, gallbladder or biliary tree.  The aim will be achieved by prospectively auditing the quality of care provided to all patients in Scotland so that continual improvements can be made.  This will hopefully lead to the outcomes and quality of life for patients being improved.

There are five Centres in Scotland and these are located in:

  • Aberdeen (Aberdeen Royal Infirmary)
  • Dundee (Ninewells Hospital)
  • Inverness (Raigmore Hospital)
  • Edinburgh (split between Royal Infirmary and Western General Hospital)
  • Glasgow (split between Royal Infirmary, Gartnavel General Hospital, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital campus and Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre)

Each Centre delivers radiology, pathology, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliative care.  The Scottish Liver Transplant Unit is based at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The SHPBN operates through it’s annual education event, annual mortality and morbidity reviews, four collaboratives (hepatocellular carcinoma, pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer liver metastasis and best supportive care), a Steering Group and short life working groups for specific tasks.  Members of the Steering Group are:
