Supportive & Psychological Care
The SANON Supportive and Psychological Care (SPC) subgroup was formed in 2007 by Dr Shirley Anderson. Initially comprising healthcare professionals, the group expanded its membership in 2011 to include representatives from each of the brain tumour charities active in Scotland. It continues as a developing collaboration between NHS staff, neuro-oncology researchers, and third-sector organisations:
A forum for communication and a platform for action.
Since its inception in November 2007 the SPC group has:
- Agreed a definition of Supportive and psychological care
- Adopted the NICE guidelines’ / Mount Vernon Cancer Network’s 4-level competency framework for psychological care in adults with cancer
- A service mapping exercise has begun assessing existing supportive/psychological care skills and identifying training needs among healthcare staff with close contact with brain tumour patients
- Collating local psychological referral pathways for review has begun
- Presented at each SANON national meeting
