COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic is having a prolonged and profound effect on hospitals and hospital admissions. This creates an ongoing concern when it comes to burn referrals especially where intensive care beds are required. It is currently the case that the Glasgow Burns Unit in particular may not be able to accept a burns referral immediately where an intensive care bed is required due to the surge in demand on ICU within the West of Scotland. Please bear this in mind when considering onward referral of a burns patient. However, I would reassure everyone that each of the 4 Plastic Surgery units across Scotland continue to accept referrals for burn treatment and in the event that a local bed is not immediately available, discussion will take place across the Scottish Burns Network to identify a suitable and safe place for treatment.
