Acute Kidney Injury Reporting – NHS Scotland and SCBMDN

Healthcare Improvement Scotland hasĀ invited Health Boards to participate in the testing and implementation of interventions, including a change package and measurement plan, to reduce harm and mortality from Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in primary and secondary care. The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD) reports that 20-30% of cases of AKI is both predictable and preventable, estimating as much as 10,000 deaths per annum being avoidable across the UK.

The Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP) has recruited a number of NHS Boards to work with to test and implement interventions prior to spread within boards and across NHS Scotland. The collaborative will run from August 2017 to March 2019. The SPSP AKI collaborative has recognised the pivotal role laboratories play in the identification of patients with AKI.

SCBMDN has compiled a dashboard of which laboratories are involved in the provision of AKI alerts, which patient groups alerts are provided for, the procedure for reporting AKI alerts and the LIMS system/provider used to deliver this. The aim of this is to allow Health Boards to compare practice with each other and to identify other Health Boards who may be able to aid or have resolved issues that are barriers to implementation or delivery of AKI alerts.

If you have any updates on the status of AKI reporting at your Health Board, please contact Dr Neil Greig at ngreig@nhs.net with amendments, as the dashboard will be updated quarterly.
