Dr Louise O’Dowd
Consultant in Restorative Dentistry
Dr O’Dowd is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry based at the Edinburgh Dental Institute (EDI). She works with the wider cleft team based at the EDI to support adult cleft patients maintain, restore and replace teeth as part of their cleft care.
Dr O’Dowd supports patients and their local dentists to keep natural teeth healthy and functional as long as possible. Some patients may require treatment to improve the appearance or function of natural teeth associated with the cleft site such as white fillings (composite) or crowns. In some cases, Dr O’Dowd provides replacement teeth when natural teeth cannot be saved or are missing.
Dr O’Dowd graduated from Dundee University Dental School in 2002. She obtained a masters in Restorative Dentistry from Newcastle University in 2008 before completing specialist training in Restorative Dentistry in 2011. She has worked at the EDI since 2011 and is the Professional Lead for the Department of Restorative Dentistry.
As well as working with the cleft Team, Dr O’Dowd is involved with teaching Postgraduate and Undergraduate students of the University of Edinburgh and NHS dentists undergoing specialist training.
