CEN Top to Tail Virtual Education Event – 31st Jan 2024

The Children with Exceptional Healthcare Needs (CEN) Network hosted a virtual education event on the topic of ‘Top to Tail’ on 31st January 2024.

Topics covered on the day are noted below, our objective for the day was to improve knowledge, confidence and understanding in these areas;

PELiCaN & CEN – Asking ‘What matters to You’ Dr Jen RogersThis session explores the principles of asking, listening and doing what matters to those who use services across health and social care. What Matters to You’ conversations help healthcare teams understand what is most important to people when they are receiving care and treatment, leading to better care partnerships and improved patient experience.
PELiCaN & CEN – EC4H: Supporting communication skill and confidence in challenging scenariosDr Murdoch & Dr Gunning. This presentation will describe the EC4H training programme briefly outlining the background, approach to training and range of training courses. It will consider psychological theory underpinning the communication processes the training aims to support and share an example of training delivery.
PELiCaN & CEN Communicating End of Life Choices – Marisa McInnesThis presentation will cover a family’s experience over the years of communicating with professionals their end of life choices and putting plans in place for such times.
PELiCaN & CEN – A Peer Support approach to support Professional Grief – M McGale & P DonnellyThis presentation will be covering Professional Grief, peer support and how peer support can help, how it was set up, results and feedback.  There will be time for questions at the end
PELiCaN & CEN – Some reflections on walking alongside – Ken RussellThis presentation will draw from Ken’s experience of walking alongside people in various settings. These include parish ministry with the Church of Scotland, full time healthcare chaplaincy with NHS Forth Valley, and full time chaplaincy with the Scottish Prison Service at HMP Perth.
PELiCaN & CEN – A Parents Perspective of Anticipatory Grief Through Pregnancy and BeyondShaun Dowdall, Charity Director, SOFT UK Receiving a diagnosis of Trisomy 13 or Trisomy 18 can be devastating for parents, but it affects us all in such different ways. Due to the spectrum of outcomes that are associated with Edwards and Patau’s, grief doesn’t begin with the physical loss, it begins so much sooner than many anticipate. In this presentation, families will talk about their lived experience of anticipatory grief through pregnancy and beyond.
PELiCaN & CEN – The impact of grief and loss on siblings – Clare KassaI am intending to talk a little about the charity, what being a sibling means, grief and loss in young siblings, bereavement in adult siblings and touch on a case study around generational grief.
PELiCaN & CEN – Life is an emotional rollercoaster – A Hollern and C PoolThis session will explore what it feels like to be on that emotional roller coaster when your child is end of life then turns a corner, sometimes multiple times.  Anne & Chanel describe what was important to them at that time
PELiCaN / CEN – Where are we now? – C Kidson & U MacFadyenDr Chris Kidson will give an overview of the work PELiCaN has undertaken since launch in 2019 and the plans in place for going forwards. Dr Una MacFadyen will give an overview of recent work undertaken by CEN and plans for the future.
