Worldwide, traumatic injury is the leading cause of death in the working population. In Scotland, accidents and major trauma are a leading cause of death in those under 75. Each year, Scotland deals with approximately 8,700 cases of significant traumatic injury. With an ageing population, severe injuries are increasingly becoming a major health burden among older adults<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Scottish Trauma Network (STN) is a bespoke, inclusive and equitable solution, which involves the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS), four regional networks across Scotland and the Scottish Trauma Audit Group (STAG). The network works collaboratively to deliver high quality, integrated, multi-specialty care to severely injured patients. This approach is designed to save more lives and improve patient outcomes throughout the trauma pathway \u2013 from prevention to rehabilitation \u2013 \u2018Saving lives and Giving life back\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each of the four regions- North, East, South East and West- has a major trauma centre (MTC) which operates alongside trauma units (TUs) and local emergency hospitals (LEHs). The network works across five dimensions of trauma care, Prevention, Pre-hospital, Acute, Rehabilitation and Major Incident Planning. Each of these five dimensions of the STN are critical in improving trauma care in Scotland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The goal of the STN is to provide a common approach to trauma care across Scotland and ensure that patients can be treated effectively at the most appropriate medical facility able to manage significant traumatic injuries.
